This school year my 6th grader and I have had a wonderful time using Institute for Excellence in Writing’s course Structure and Style for Students Level B. This course has been a incredibly beneficial for both me and my son, Daniel. It has provided a structured writing program that he is learning so much from. As a bonus it provides everything you need, ready to go, and easy to use! We also both love that he can work through most of it and learn independently.
About the Level B Structure and Style for Students Course
The Institute For Excellence in Writing has developed an amazing writing course that has been a great experience for my middle school student. The course is laid out well in a manner that makes it easy for the homeschool parent and student to easily plan and complete lessons each day. The writing curriculum is also easily adaptable to whatever schedule works best for the students. Each week follows a similar structure, giving students a familiar routine to follow. Students watch the video class in 2 parts. We follow the suggested daily breakdown watching Part 1 on Monday each week and Part 2 on Tuesday.
My son loves the independence this course has given him. By watching the videos of Andrew Pudewa teaching he feels like he is part of a classroom. He watches the video, takes notes, and does his assignments. We go over what he learned, and edit is rough drafts each week together and go over vocabulary. Also, I answer any questions he may have about his assignments. I watch the videos ahead of him and read his passages so that I am know what the course is requiring each week. Also the Teacher’s Manual provides teaching suggestions to support your student, explanations of the notes given and vocabulary.
The Structure and Style Writing course focuses on learning to write by reading examples of good writing, outlining the passages with Key Word Outlines, and then summarizing. This structured approach has helped my son organize his thoughts and write cleaner more organized paragraphs. My son loves to write and is creative in his writing, however he struggled with good sentence structure and organizing his thoughts on paper. This structured approach to teaching writing is just what he needed!

A 6th Grader’s Perspective
“I really like watching the videos. Mr. Pudewa is funny when he teaches. I like the passages. They are interesting and I have enjoyed reading them. I am learning a lot about writing a summary and how to outline a passage.” -Daniel
