My 8 and 10 year old boys now have a new favorite way to learn geography thanks to Byron’s Games. Ever since the game Continent Race arrived in the mail my boys have been playing and having fun learning the names, locations, and flags of different countries all around the world. My kids love the challenge of the game and I love that they are learning!
About Continent Race
Continent Race is a geography based board game. It has been a wonderful addition to our board game collection. The game is bright and colorful and looks fun and exciting to kids. The game board is sturdy and shows each of the continents using colors that match the cards. The cards are also a good sturdy playing card. The game also includes a sturdy board for each continent that has a bigger map of each individual continent that lets you easily find the countries. Also on the back it provides an alphabetical list of all the countries in each continent. The game is recommended for ages 7 and up. We realized though that younger children, could easily play along with some help if you were playing just the basic game.
One amazing thing about the game Continent Race, is that it was actually designed by a young boy. This is evident in how it appeals to my kids! After an extended stay in the hospital, Byron was able to realize his dream of creating a game that would help children learn. His story and love for learning is inspiring.
Byron and his family devote themselves to developing fun products to help children learn and explore more about the things they are interested in! They even donate a portion of all their profits to children’s Charities. You can read more of Byron’s story on their website, Byron’s Games. After playing Continent Race I look forward to using more of their learning resources with my family.
How to play Continent Race
Continent Race is not a difficult game to learn to play. The basic concept of the game is similar to that of a rummy card game. Each player simply draws and discards cards with the goal of collecting entire continent groups. All the basic game cards are colorful with their colors matching the continent of their continent group.
The “game board” is a large world map. As you collect cards you can look and see the where the country is on the map. Also, every card has the country’s flag on it! Because of all these things, the more you play the more you will learn about all the countries of the world! My kids and I realized early on that there are a lot of countries we don’t know exactly how to pronounce. Well Byron’s games has taken care of that problem as well. On their website there are video files and a PDF file with the correct phonetic pronunciation of each country in the world.
More ways to play
The basic game uses only the cards that have color coded continent groups so you immediately know what what continent each country belongs in. My boys and I played the basic game several times and had a lot of fun! Then, my kids were determined to take it up a notch. There are several ways that Byron’s Games has added to the basic game to make it more challenging and learn even more. The first is by adding the mystery cards. These cards are all orange with a question mark on them. When the are added to the deck and drawn, you will search the map large map cards to determine what continent group the country belongs in.
The other way you can add to the Continent Race is by adding the one on one challenges. Some cards are marked with a challenge symbol on them. My boys get super excited when they draw one of the these cards. It means they get to choose another player to challenge to a country naming battle. Whatever continent group the challenge card belongs to is your focus of the challenge. Players take turns naming countries (without looking) that are located on the continent. Whoever names the most wins the challenge and gets the card. My competitive boys loved trying to beat each other in challenges every chance they get!
My family has loved our time together learning and playing Continent Race from Byron’s games. If you are looking for a fun way to learn geography, I highly recommend it.
