Disclosure: I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew
This week I am so excited to tell you about this brand new course from ARTistic Pursuits called Beginner Level, Art Core 2, Painting with Watercolor Pencils. My 11 year old son, loves art and has done a drawing course with ARTistic Pursuits in the past! He was especially happy to be able to try out their course that teaches him how to use watercolor pencils. This was a new medium for both of us. I also enjoyed watching the videos and learning how to use watercolor pencils for painting!
What is Included in this Art Course?
ARTistic Pursuits‘ Beginner Level, Art Core 2, Painting with Watercolor Pencils course provides a physical text book and DVD’s and/or (depending on your preference) online access to an electronic flip book and online streaming of the instructional videos. We received access to both of the formats. My son and I enjoyed having a physical copy of the book to use and the convenience of being able to easily stream the lesson videos on a computer. He could easily set up the laptop on the kitchen table a bit behind where he set up his art supplies. He could then easily rewatch parts of the video if he needed to see the instructions again.
The course does not come with the art supplies needed. However, ARTistic Pursuits does offer a bundle of all the supplies needed. However, the only supplies that were needed for this course that we didn’t already have were watercolor pencils. I bought these separately. Definitely look at the required materials list and make sure you have all you need for the course. ARTistic Pursuits‘ supplies bundle would be a good deal if you needed to purchase all the required art materials and tools.
How this Art Course Works for our Homeschool
One thing I love about the all the ARTistic Pursuits courses we have tried is that they are flexible and easily fit into any homeschool routine. This course with the provided text book and video lessons was easy for my 11 year old to be able to work on individually a few times each week if needed. Some lessons we read through and/or watched the videos together because we enjoyed it. However, they were very easy to follow and learn from on his own when needed. All the directions in this course are extremely easy to follow. There are also quite a few introductory videos to help you get started working through this course. The dashboard is easy to use to access your course, and was easily navigated by my son independently.
The Art Lessons
Each time you want to do an art lesson, simply start with your book first. The lesson will tell you right at the beginning if there is a video to watch corresponding to the lesson. Some lessons are video based, and other are text-based. There are Video Lessons included in each of the units to demonstrate proper use of the watercolor pencils, and painting techniques. The videos are short but informative and very well done. My son enjoyed watching the videos and being able to then practice the technique afterwards. The video lessons were definitely my sons favorite part because of the direct instruction.
Included in each unit are text based instruction in the book that teach the use of color and painting. They also include an art history/artist lesson in each unit as well. The art history lessons relate the techniques taught in the unit to well known artists. My son loves art, but has never enjoyed art history lessons. But relating it to the art techniques he is learning has increased his interest. The text lessons are short, (no more than 2 pages) and do not require too much reading. They take only about 5-10 minutes to go over and learn. Most of the time for our art lessons are spent with him actually getting to practice art.
