In our homeschool, we always start our day with Devotions and Bible Study. We do this because we teach our kids, that learning to read and understand God’s word and developing a relationship with Him is the most important thing we do. It is also a blessing to me to be able to start our day together and focus on the Lord.
I am always looking for resources that will encourage our kids relationships with the Lord and get them excited about their Bible Studies. For this reason, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to review The Action Bible Anytime Devotions from David C Cook which has done just that for my kids!
All About The Action Bible Anytime Devotions Book
The Action Bible Anytime Devotions is a wonderful devotional book for families who have kids who love comic books! My boys (8 and 10) enjoyed the comic style of the illustrations throughout each of the devotions. The book is also paperback and almost has a comic book feel to it because of it’s size. Although the book is paperback, the spine and pages are bound well. There are 90 different devotional stories included in this 195 page book, which gives us months of daily devotions to enjoy with our kids!
The Devotions
Each of the Devotions has a basic theme shown highlighted with black at the top of the right page of each devotion. The themes are all one word topics like, Faith, Love, Courage, Strength, Trust, Hope, or Kindness. These basic themes repeat throughout the book, but use different scriptural references, stories, and examples of how they apply to our lives. Each of the devotions has a different title that gets right to the point and relates directly to kids immediately. Some examples of the devotion titles are “When You Feel Like Hiding”, “For Showing God’s Love”, “Whenever you Fear”, “When you get tired of the rules”, “When you listen”, and “When you need need wisdom”. These titles are all phrases that kids can understand easily.
Each of the devotions start with a story of a real life example of a problem or situation that kids may face. They also then give examples that relate from stories in scripture. After the story, it encourages kids to respond by giving a sample prayer and suggestions for ways to apply what God tells us. The devotions are short and only take about 5 minutes to read together. However, if you want to dig deeper each devotion gives a reference to a Bible story to read to learn even more.
How we have enjoyed this book
My boys and I have made The Action Bible Anytime Devotions book a part of our morning Bible time together. For now, most of the time, I have been reading the stories aloud and and then we discuss it together. However, the reading level of the stories are perfectly fine for either my 8 or 10 year old to read independently, which they have enjoyed doing several times.
I have enjoyed being able to use the questions and response sections to discuss these stories with my kids. They have opened up deeper conversations for us about how we can respond to God in every situation. I look forward to continuing to use this devotional book with my kids! Using this devotional has also shown me that my kids would love some of the other resources from David C Cook, especially The Action Bible. The Action Bible would pair wonderfully with the Anytime Devotions book. David C Cook has given us an excellent resources to get our kids even more excited about God’s word, and helps them learn to apply it to their lives.
